EVENT: GO FOR THE GOLD.

EVENT: GO FOR THE GOLD.

With the blizzard come and gone, the city administration makes quick work of transforming the landscape from a post-apocalyptic white dream (or nightmare) to a more picturesque winter wonderland. While the heavy snow drifts are easily plowed away and the sheets of ice quickly cleared from roofs and bridges, the grounds of the city's parks and sidewalks still enjoy their seasonal coating of soft, fresh snow.

By mid-month, new posters begin to pop up on bulletin boards and network advertisements, featuring the cheerful sound of trumpets and the encouraging view of your favorite volunteer coordinators, inviting you to take part in the city's annual winter games. It's not quite olympian, and no previous experience is required — any and all are welcome to sign up for as many events as they'd like, and while medals aren't awarded, winners may very well find themselves bequeathed with something even more fun! (We hear bar tabs and instachecks are all the rage these days!)

Feeling festive? Come join the fun this weekend at the games!

▸ Are you freakishly flexible? Are you beauty? Are you grace? (We recommend not punching the judges in the face.) Ski ballet may be just the game for you! Play your walk up song as you emerge on skis to Cadelle's adoring crowds. You'll have 90 seconds to make your way downhill while twirling, spinning, kicking and leaping your way with style. Don't want to go it alone? This year Cadelle's offering the chance to compete in pairs. Let's hope your chemistry sets the rain slopes on fire.

▸ Does anyone remember that phrase 'Go sit on a block of ice?' Well, the sport of ice blocking takes that little idiom rather literally as participants slide down one of the city's grassier hills with little more than a giant block of ice, graciously provided by the local ice master. First one down is the winner! Though, just as a reminder: the city is not responsible for any stuck tongues, buns, or other body parts that may result from this event.

▸ Are you crazy about water? Are you unafraid of those freezing waves? The sport of polar diving may be perfect for you! Be sure to slather on the providied petroleum jelly all over your exposed skin and climb on top of the recently built high dive board at Lake Bunton — once you're poised and ready, let loose with your best swan dive... or bellyflop. Three judges will score your stylish dive on a scale of 1-10. The best average score wins!

▸ Are you a fixture at Lucky Lanes? Or is that elusive perfect 300 a pipe dream? Either way, what happens when you mix winter weather, pins, and big round balls? Epic fun, of course, in the form of a fantastically frenzied game of ice bowling! Just.... try not to fall over as you do your victory shuffle after you get that 7-10 split.

Of course, if you're not the sporting type, there's still plenty to see and do during the games! Maybe you'll opt to cheer on your friends and neighbors in their exploits — flags, vuvuzelas, and all manner of spectator accessories are available for purchase from nearby vendors, and for those who may not want to spend a fortune, the city offers free decorate-it-yourself kits for banners at the entrance to the viewing stands! More entreprenurial citizens may choose to invest in a willing market; visit the barking traveling bookies to place a wager on your favored winner, or maybe lay down a few cuddlebucks on an implausible yet possible end scenario — Ireland wins but Russia gets the snitch, anyone?

Whether you've opted to practice your best polar bear performance, rolled a turkey on the ice, or maybe just kept warm in your parka on the stands, be sure to keep a space open in the end of your weekend for the city's closing ceremony. There's the traditional pomp and circumstance, of course, in the issuance of awards and winner's trophies; more important and certainly more exciting, though, is the hosted dinner, held outdoors under a gleaming white tent just beyond the shores of Blue Springs Pool. It's a beautiful place to enjoy a delicious meal with friends, so the city certainly hopes you'll make time to attend!

Howdy, cuddlers!

With the excitement of the 2018 Winter Games just around the corner, we thought it might be fun for you to get to enjoy some sportsmanship of your own this time of year. While the Olympic Games are certainly reserved for the best of the best, Cadelle's version is open to all, and focuses less on swiftly navigating down snowy hills on your preferred mode of transportation (because, really, what else differentiates snowboarding from skiing from bobsled racing and luge...?) and more on the way you choose to move! We hope your characters have a blast while they dance on skis, slide on giant blocks of ice, dive into freezing cold water, or just roll an ice ball down a slick plane of frozen grass... or maybe just watch all their friends make fools of themselves instead!

If you have any further questions specific to this event, we encourage you to ask away on our QUESTIONS COMMENT here in this post. If you have general questions, or prefer a more private venue, our GENERAL INBOX (and SCREENED INBOX) is always available for you. In addition, if you've got an idea for a future event, feel free to drop us a line at our EVENTS SUGGESTION POST.

Peace out, girl scouts! We'll see you around!

polar diving

Sansa has no idea why someone would want to dive into ice cold water but after a morning of ice bowling, she's more than happy to wrap up in a cloak and a blanket and watch the diving from on shore. There's another woman who seems to have the same idea and Sansa decides she'll stop being so insular and try to make a little conversation. Once, she'd been good at this. Now she's stiff and unpracticed but she knows it will come to her again.

"Do you think they're mad to jump in the water when it's so cold? Where I'm from, we wouldn't dare." Sansa knows from experience, having crossed a river in the middle of winter.

Isabelle turns to the red head with a smile and nods enthusiastically before glancing back to see if the next contender was about to take a dive. She shivers visibly, maybe a little exaggerated.

"But I'll admit it's fun to watch them make fools of themselves," she agrees. Mundanes find the strangest ways to entertain themselves, she sometimes thinks. Usually she's not overly judgmental about it, but things like this... it's like they want to test death. This seems like a pretty pointless way to do it.

The next contestant shrieks nearly the whole way down til they're engulfed by water and Isabelle giggles quietly.

"I come from the North and we have never had any desire to willingly jump into ice cold water," Sansa says, laughing along with Isabelle as the latest contestant jumps in and shrieks. She doesn't think she's doing anything other than curling up in her blanket with her cocoa, thanks.

It seems like a very good way to die in Sansa's estimation but there's no accounting for taste. She turns her head a bit to look at Isabelle.

"You seem sensible, at least."

[personal profile] sororis 2018-01-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
While Izzy only has her own ideas of the North to go by, she can still empathize. Even if Sansa meant Canada it would make enough sense to her.

“There are so many better ways to get an adrenaline rush,” she says, laughter still in her voice. She can think of a handful of ways with no trouble at all, though with a little distance she might also be able to admit her life is hardly normal. There's a reason the average human is referred to as a Mundane in her world.

She turns to Sansa more fully now at her next observation, and grins, cocking her head to the side a moment. “I've always thought so,” she says, reaching out her hand in introduction. “I'm Isabelle.”
theladyofwinterfell: (it's not enough)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-01-24 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sansa takes her hand and clasps it between both of hers before squeezing once. She has seen handshakes here in Cadelle but it's still a strange concept to her; she prefers her own modification on the greeting. Isabelle has a lovely voice, laced with laughter and it makes Sansa a bit happier just to hear it.

"Sansa," she says in return. "Well met, Isabelle."

There's more divers running and shrieking as they jump into the water but Sansa isn't nearly as interested in them as she is in conversing with Isabelle further.

[personal profile] sororis 2018-01-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
While Isabelle's worldview might be a little wider than some, it still hadn't occurred to her that someone who was clearly human might not share the same customs. But Sansa's version of a handshake is endearing, and Izzy finds herself mimicking it, reach up with her other hand so they're a bundle of held hands for a moment.

“It's nice to meet you, Sansa,” she says in return, even more curious now. “You said you were from the North?” she asks for clarity.

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-01-26 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I am, yes. I was born at Winterfell and we had just retaken the castle before I arrived here," Sansa explains. It's a little strange to describe it, considering most people here do not know of Westeros, but she likes talking about where she's from.

"It is cold there nearly all the time, even in the summer."
sororis: (004)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-01-30 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
“Winterfell?” she asks, and as Sansa continues, the name makes sense. And a castle, and battle, sounds like. Izzy isn't really one to get tripped up in the presence of royalty, if anything, she treats everyone the same unless they demand her deference, and Sansa hasn't been anything but approachable on her level, and so she saves that assumption for later.

“Sounds like you could use the vacation,” she offers lightly. “It hasn't been peaceful where I came from,” she continues. “I'm hoping my... time here will give us some peace.”
theladyofwinterfell: (Default)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-01-31 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Peace is all one could want," Sansa agrees. "It's been so long since I've seen true peace that I think I've forgotten how to trust in it. I hate to hear that it may be the same for you," she says.

No one should have to endure battles the way she has. Sansa thinks she's endured more war than peace and she enjoys that Cadelle has provided a respite.
sororis: (001)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-02-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Isabelle can't help but smile at that, to have found someone who has clearly lived a hard life and yet remained kind. That's a rarity.

“I hope you find some peace,” she says honestly, feeling a little overly formal but she can't seem to help it. “But it is hard to trust it,” she agrees a moment later, thinking of how she still wakes up expecting to have demons to hunt, missions to accomplish, enemies... it's not easy to just settle in to a new, peaceful way of life without waiting for the other shoe to drop.

“How long have you been here?” she asks, attempting to segue into, hopefully, a lighter topic of conversation. Not that she's opposed to talking of war if Sansa wants to, but she thinks that those who live it have less need to relive it.
theladyofwinterfell: (put me in my place)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-02-05 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I've been here several moons now," Sansa explains. It's been at least five since she arrived, possibly six, and she loses track of the days the longer she's away from Winterfell and Westeros. It's strange to think she's been in this place alone and away from everything she's ever known and not been clawing to go back but she hasn't. She has enjoyed the peace that Cadelle has offered her and she's happy for it, even if it's tempered with the knowledge that she must return someday to Winterfell.

"It was summer when I arrived and the winter has come now, so five or six? The seasons are very different here so it's a little harder for me to track the days than it is at home."
sororis: (002)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-02-12 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Izzy nods along, moons and months are much the same in the passing of time, and she understands well enough, and it sounds like the seasons pass normally as far as her own experience, but she's curious about Sansa's experience. Then again, living somewhere cold and northerly would probably mean less variation in the seasons...

"I'm glad it's not always this cold here," she offers, even if she's snug in her parka.

"Do you like it here?" she asks, as if it's a simple question, even though she knows it can't be such a simple answer. She's hardly been in Cadelle at all and already her own answer feels complicated.
theladyofwinterfell: (ready for a fight)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-02-12 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"I do like it here." Sansa hasn't ever had cause to really lay it out that way in such simple terms but it is nice here in Cadelle and she goes to bed at night not worried that someone is going to hurt her. She wakes in the morning free of worries about having enough food, about having enough men to defend her, about having enough wood to burn to stave off the cold.

All in all, she does like it here even if she's never put it so plainly before.

"It's so different from where I come from and it's so...safe. I haven't felt safe in a long time."
sororis: (011)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-02-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Isabelle just smiles for a moment and nods. Her life was rarely peaceful, but it wasn't until recently that it had become personal exactly how much danger the ones she loved were in.

"I'm sorry," she says sincerely, her smile fading, sorry that she hasn't known safety. It's something Isabelle has spent her life fighting for, if not always experiencing. Most people don't ever realize they're in danger.

"It's good to hear it's safe here," she continues, just a flash of a smirk, "Even if that puts me out of a job. Guess I'm on vacation, too."

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-02-16 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose it's a good reason not to have to do your duty," Sansa says, managing a bit of a smile. "If you're anything like my brother, the idea of going without doing your duty for even a day must feel completely foreign to you."

Sansa knows Jon wouldn't have taken as well to Cadelle as she has. He has to always be doing something for Winterfell or Westeros.
sororis: (003)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-02-16 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Isabelle laughs brightly, suddenly. "Your brother sounds a lot like my brother," she says, grinning at Sansa. "He's finally started to loosen up a little, but it took a miracle," she continues, slightly conspiratorially, as if Alec is going to appear just long enough to roll his eyes at her.

"But you're right. It's strange to know that I don't have to be on duty here."
theladyofwinterfell: (pick me up)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-02-16 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Without Winterfell to run, sometimes my days feel empty," Sansa confesses. "I will wake up in the middle of the night concerned about grain stores or how many head of cattle we have and then realize that I am leagues and leagues away from that."

It's strange but she's grown used to the feeling that here in Cadelle, she only has to care for herself and her own needs.

"I just have to find new things to fill them."
sororis: (006)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-02-18 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
She can't help but nod along, even if her own duties are definitely more of the foot soldier/assassin variety, it's strange to wake up knowing she's not really needed in the same sense, here. Not really. Her brother has the Institute to run, in New York, and supporting him is her duty. More of an honor, though. But here... here she can just be. And she's not sure she's cut out for it.

"You and I both," she agrees. Just then another contestant hits the water with a shriek and a splash and Izzy laughs suddenly. "Anything but that," she says lightly.
theladyofwinterfell: (put me in my place)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-02-19 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"I am not jumping into ice cold water for any reason other than to save my own life," Sansa says mildly. She's done that before and she will do it again because she is a wolf of Winterfell but she will not enjoy it. She certainly will not do it for something so trivial as enjoyment and entertainment.

"I don't know why it couldn't be a dancing competition or something. Dancing is something you could do without risking frostbite."
sororis: (004)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-02-22 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Izzy nods her agreement. What was endured for survival can have some overlap with what she does for fun... and this isn't either of those things for her. But dancing...

“Yes!” she agrees instantly. “I tried to add a little flair to the snow ballet,” she explains, “But I would have loved a real dance competition.” She assesses Sansa with new eyes, still smiling as sincerely as ever. “What kind of dancing do you do?”
theladyofwinterfell: (it comes with a price)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-02-23 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I've begun to learn ballet since I've been here," Sansa says. "But I teach court dances at the dance studio. It comes under ballroom dancing, the way it's described there, but we don't have that word to describe it in Westeros."

Sansa smiles, happy to talk about dancing and how much she's really come to enjoy it even if she's never had to work before. "I do love ballet, though. I like the idea of being powerful while being graceful at the same time."
sororis: (006)

[personal profile] sororis 2018-03-02 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Izzy's not sure she can grin any brighter or wider if she tried. “I never learned ballet,” she admits. Other dances that could be learned more quickly, that she could sneak away and learn from the Seelie, or in a club, from a partner or a friend, those were the dances she knew. Ballet required time and commitment and she had very little of those to spare in her life.

“I'd like to come to your class,” she says, after Sansa explains. “And maybe a ballet class. We can compare notes.” Already she's finding wonderful things to fill her time.
theladyofwinterfell: (it comes with a price)

[personal profile] theladyofwinterfell 2018-03-03 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I would love to have you. I've found that you pick it up easier if you already know other kinds of dance or are athletic," Sansa says. "So you may have an advantage you don't know about. I find it relaxes me to do ballet, though, and gives me strength in ways that aren't obvious."

Sansa has enjoyed it thoroughly and there's nothing she loves more than to teach someone else so they can share in that joy.
