EVENT: GO FOR THE GOLD.

EVENT: GO FOR THE GOLD.

With the blizzard come and gone, the city administration makes quick work of transforming the landscape from a post-apocalyptic white dream (or nightmare) to a more picturesque winter wonderland. While the heavy snow drifts are easily plowed away and the sheets of ice quickly cleared from roofs and bridges, the grounds of the city's parks and sidewalks still enjoy their seasonal coating of soft, fresh snow.

By mid-month, new posters begin to pop up on bulletin boards and network advertisements, featuring the cheerful sound of trumpets and the encouraging view of your favorite volunteer coordinators, inviting you to take part in the city's annual winter games. It's not quite olympian, and no previous experience is required — any and all are welcome to sign up for as many events as they'd like, and while medals aren't awarded, winners may very well find themselves bequeathed with something even more fun! (We hear bar tabs and instachecks are all the rage these days!)

Feeling festive? Come join the fun this weekend at the games!

▸ Are you freakishly flexible? Are you beauty? Are you grace? (We recommend not punching the judges in the face.) Ski ballet may be just the game for you! Play your walk up song as you emerge on skis to Cadelle's adoring crowds. You'll have 90 seconds to make your way downhill while twirling, spinning, kicking and leaping your way with style. Don't want to go it alone? This year Cadelle's offering the chance to compete in pairs. Let's hope your chemistry sets the rain slopes on fire.

▸ Does anyone remember that phrase 'Go sit on a block of ice?' Well, the sport of ice blocking takes that little idiom rather literally as participants slide down one of the city's grassier hills with little more than a giant block of ice, graciously provided by the local ice master. First one down is the winner! Though, just as a reminder: the city is not responsible for any stuck tongues, buns, or other body parts that may result from this event.

▸ Are you crazy about water? Are you unafraid of those freezing waves? The sport of polar diving may be perfect for you! Be sure to slather on the providied petroleum jelly all over your exposed skin and climb on top of the recently built high dive board at Lake Bunton — once you're poised and ready, let loose with your best swan dive... or bellyflop. Three judges will score your stylish dive on a scale of 1-10. The best average score wins!

▸ Are you a fixture at Lucky Lanes? Or is that elusive perfect 300 a pipe dream? Either way, what happens when you mix winter weather, pins, and big round balls? Epic fun, of course, in the form of a fantastically frenzied game of ice bowling! Just.... try not to fall over as you do your victory shuffle after you get that 7-10 split.

Of course, if you're not the sporting type, there's still plenty to see and do during the games! Maybe you'll opt to cheer on your friends and neighbors in their exploits — flags, vuvuzelas, and all manner of spectator accessories are available for purchase from nearby vendors, and for those who may not want to spend a fortune, the city offers free decorate-it-yourself kits for banners at the entrance to the viewing stands! More entreprenurial citizens may choose to invest in a willing market; visit the barking traveling bookies to place a wager on your favored winner, or maybe lay down a few cuddlebucks on an implausible yet possible end scenario — Ireland wins but Russia gets the snitch, anyone?

Whether you've opted to practice your best polar bear performance, rolled a turkey on the ice, or maybe just kept warm in your parka on the stands, be sure to keep a space open in the end of your weekend for the city's closing ceremony. There's the traditional pomp and circumstance, of course, in the issuance of awards and winner's trophies; more important and certainly more exciting, though, is the hosted dinner, held outdoors under a gleaming white tent just beyond the shores of Blue Springs Pool. It's a beautiful place to enjoy a delicious meal with friends, so the city certainly hopes you'll make time to attend!

Howdy, cuddlers!

With the excitement of the 2018 Winter Games just around the corner, we thought it might be fun for you to get to enjoy some sportsmanship of your own this time of year. While the Olympic Games are certainly reserved for the best of the best, Cadelle's version is open to all, and focuses less on swiftly navigating down snowy hills on your preferred mode of transportation (because, really, what else differentiates snowboarding from skiing from bobsled racing and luge...?) and more on the way you choose to move! We hope your characters have a blast while they dance on skis, slide on giant blocks of ice, dive into freezing cold water, or just roll an ice ball down a slick plane of frozen grass... or maybe just watch all their friends make fools of themselves instead!

If you have any further questions specific to this event, we encourage you to ask away on our QUESTIONS COMMENT here in this post. If you have general questions, or prefer a more private venue, our GENERAL INBOX (and SCREENED INBOX) is always available for you. In addition, if you've got an idea for a future event, feel free to drop us a line at our EVENTS SUGGESTION POST.

Peace out, girl scouts! We'll see you around!

Swan Dive
There is no need, Loki had decided, to make a spectacle of himself. Not yet. Therefore, ski ballet, whatever that was, wouldn't do at all, but polar diving? It's almost cheating for Loki to participate in something like that. So, naturally, he signs up. Naturally, he waits for his turn in an emerald green cloak trimmed elaborately with silver fur, making friendly conversation with his competitors and watching the dives. The judges are looking for control, a little flair, and a decided lack of shrieking when the diver hits the cold water, he decides. Very well, he can deliver.

And when it's nearly his turn, naturally a sheen of magic strips away the cloak and the armor beneath, leaving him in black shorts in the icy air, still as casual as if it were midsummer. This is the impression he wants to leave: people murmuring, people curious, people wondering. He waves off the insulating jelly that's offered and climbs to the platform, reminded strongly of cliff-diving on Asgard as a youth. Before that thought can take root and throw him off, he leaps and executes his own set of spins and flips, then cuts smoothly into the water. He can feel the cold, but it doesn't touch him, and the towel he's offered when he climbs out again is used to absently wring out his hair before his magic replaces the warm cloak.

"Well, that was diverting. Are you going to dive?"

She's grateful, in a way, that she hadn't noticed him before her own dive. Even from a distance there's no missing the display. Of course he'd be here. Of course there's really no chance of respite or truly leaving her past behind her. Not even her most recent past.

Even though she can admit his technique is flawless, she grinds her teeth. She almost has a convincing smile in place by the time he breaks the surface. It's finally a smirk by the time Loki makes it to shore, even though her nearly-chattering teeth are threatening to shatter the illusion of cool, calm, collectedness. Definitely overdoing the cool.

Her arms are crossed instead of wrapped around herself, skin clearly tight from the cold, her hair a long, freezing braid down her back. And as he summons the cloak again from seemingly nowhere she scoffs.

"Now I really can say I've seen more of you than I ever cared to."

Loki actually stops short for half a step when he realizes it's her. What is she doing here? Loki had counted on being among strangers, building up a persona here, just as he'd done on Sakaar, but this time it would have been quiet and genuine. He can't do that with her around. For one thing, she'll fray his concentration and rub him the wrong way, and for another, she'd see the quiet and genuine side of him.

Of course, by the time he reaches her, the irritation and conflict are hidden far beneath the sleek smile, and when he gets near enough, he sweeps the cloak off his shoulders and around hers in one gentlemanly motion.

"The Valkyrie. I am touched that you were looking. What brings you to this fine city?" Yes, there is a hidden edge in that question. He wants to know what wish she pursues.

cooties

The worst part is how he holds her attention without even trying, but he infuriates her even more easily and that's centering. And he's no less a threat disrobed than otherwise. She holds her ground, doesn't uncross her arms as he settles the cloak around her, holds his gaze, piercing and assessing, and there's a flutter like rocks settling at recent memory and ancient memory combined. Hopefully the laws of this city will restrain him to merely asking.

"I have no intention of touching you again, rest assured," she tells him, smiling again. "Wished on a star," she answers, eyes wide and innocent as she shifts just slightly. The cloak is ridiculously long on her but she thinks she wears it well. It's difficult to resist the compulsion to rub her face in the fur just to see what it would feel like.

"Aren't you cold?" she asks, curious in spite of herself. He hasn't summoned another cloak from whatever magical space he stores his clothes, and she's growing bored of the show.

"No," he says automatically, mildly puzzled at the question before he realizes she may not know his true origins, even if she knows of his status as an adopted brother to Thor. She doesn't know which realm he came from. It doesn't occur to him that she almost certainly does not care either. As if to guard against that revelation, he conjures a warm set of armor, sturdy boots, the type of thing they should have all worn to Jotunheim the first time.

As another contestant climbs up to the platform and hesitates, Loki turns to watch. "I am sorry I did not witness your performance," he says courteously. "I am certain it was masterful." The fur on the cloak is very soft and very warm, a little touch of luxury, and it shouldn't smell like him, but it does. He plans on walking away without it, just to see what she'll do.

*cuties, fixed that for u

[personal profile] diewalkure 2018-01-21 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
She raises an eyebrow automatically, then the other one when he seems to contradict himself by summoning warm clothes. Whatever, if he wants to be contrary about it. Either way, she's keeping the cloak, and she has no idea what he smells like, offhand, and doesn't care, it's warm and it suits her and if it happens to smell good, then bonus.

She snorts but angles her head in some semblance of a bow at his praise, even if it's for a performance he didn't witness. "You weren't so bad, yourself," and maybe he'll hurt himself thinking about it when he realizes yes, that was a genuine compliment, coming from her.

Unfortunately, the current jumper will receive no such praise. They appear to need a little extra motivation to take the plunge. "GET ON WITH IT OR GET OFF," she calls out helpfully.

[personal profile] frostedire 2018-01-23 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between making an impression and attracting attention, and there's no need to invite questions about why he could walk about in the dead of winter, wet, with no need for a covering. Easier to fade from notice by putting himself back into his accustomed clothes.

Never mind thinking about that comment that sounded suspiciously like a compliment. He'd rather not be punched at the moment, thank you, he knows his limits.

Mostly. "You're such a warm, positive person," he says with a too-bright smile as the contestant flinches back from the edge, then throws themselves over it with, frankly, very little style. "Hm. Mediocre at best. You frightened them, I think."
diewalkure: (006)

[personal profile] diewalkure 2018-01-24 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Fortunately for him, she's not that curious at the moment. He's not the only one who had been hoping another place to be unknown, and having someone around who was capable of prying things forward she'd rather not deal with, whether past memories or curiosities, kind of set fire to that hope.

She's almost disappointed he doesn't call her out for the compliment, there's something about him that makes her want to provoke him. It's a character flaw of hers, she can admit, but she is who she is.

“Someone has to offset your chill,” she declares, with a wicked grin toward the jumper. “You're welcome, helps your chances,” she adds, as if she's done him a favor scaring the competition. She might to have to reevaluate what she considers entertainment, here.
frostedire: (Cellblock | 005)

[personal profile] frostedire 2018-01-26 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a sharp look at "chill," but it could be taken in several ways. "Or perhaps you are attempting to move yourself up in position?" he asks skeptically, because while he may have taken her compliment in stride (since it was both a fact and an understatement), for what reason would the Valkyrie of all people do something that would benefit Loki?

"No need for that, I think, I'm certain we shall both be competing for a seat at the top." And he had planned on that competition being against strangers. All of this had been intended to involve strangers. That had largely been the point. He can't quite pinpoint the reason for it, but he feels somewhat cheated, having her here.
diewalkure: (013)

[personal profile] diewalkure 2018-01-31 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
She would do something to benefit him purely for the knowledge he would waste the time over-analyzing it. However in this case, it's simply a throw away line with the added bonus of seeming to perplex him before he dismisses it. There's a slight breeze off the water and she pulls the cloak a little tighter around herself before she thinks better of it, savoring the warmth and the barrier against the cold. She scoffs at his assumption, she really hadn't been looking to improve her standing.

"I'll admit I hadn't expected the competition," she offers, not looking at him, instead dedicating her attention to the next jumper she absolutely will not attempt to encourage, as tempting as it might be. A smirk curves her lips all the same, however, her statement both arrogant and questioning. She doesn't care about his reason for being here, not really, not yet, but the fact that he's here at all seems telling, somehow.

[personal profile] frostedire 2018-02-01 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
She already knows him better than his brother, if she's picked up on that. But the little fluff of irritation is blown away by the satisfaction of seeing her enjoying the cloak he'd made. He hopes it becomes a regular part of her winter wardrobe.

"Well then, I'm pleased to offer the unexpected," he says, also watching the newest jumper. He has some style, but lacks the discipline and athleticism of the Asgardians. "Hm. A seven out of ten," he decides as the man surfaces with a yell and strikes out immediately for the shore.
diewalkure: (005)

[personal profile] diewalkure 2018-02-06 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's a lovely cloak, and it's been a long time she's she's felt anything so fine, she can almost forget the source of it. She's not convinced it won't vanish inconveniently when he sees fit, but she's not going to mention that, either.

Loki isn't an easy read, necessarily, but she's spent enough time observing people in life or death situations that the light, easy moments like this are almost more perilous. Who people are when they think they're safe can be an entirely different person than who people are when they feel threatened.

It's almost too easy to feel comfortable with this Loki, and it's exactly that feeling that has her on edge.

“I give it a six for that splash,” she says easily enough. “How long have you been here?” It seems an innocent enough question.
frostedire: (Cellblock | 005)

[personal profile] frostedire 2018-02-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
"True. He flinched." They can't have that, in an event of this calibre.

The question echoes back to that moment of seeing Thor again after weeks of dancing his way through survival on Sakaar, but at least the time difference isn't so great this time. Nor had he arrived here thinking everything he'd known in his life was in ashes now. All things considered, it's better. Which makes him wary in itself.

"Not long," he says neutrally. "Several days. When did you arrive?"
diewalkure: (024)

[personal profile] diewalkure 2018-02-14 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Week ago," she answers, less neutrally. Definitely some kind of amused and annoyed at the same time. Because of course they've somehow arrived at the same time. Probably from the same time, but that seems less relevant, they wouldn't have had most of this conversation otherwise. Thor will be along at any moment now, at this rate, she imagines.

Of course, it's also somewhat comforting they've both been there and only just run into each other.

There are only a few more divers to go, and she can't help a smirk at the realization. Soon enough they'll find out who the winner is and she hadn't really cared til she realized she actually had competition.
frostedire: (Asgard | 011)

[personal profile] frostedire 2018-02-15 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Loki gives her a mildly irritated look before turning his attention back to the competitors. So neither of them have an edge on the other, not here. That's...good, he supposes. Reluctant allies though they might be, there could come a time when a familiar face is welcome.

It's more likely she'll exist to vex him, but two can play at that game.

"Well, I would say 'welcome,' but it appears we are each as welcome as the other." He pauses as another diver goes into the water, and despite his best efforts, he cannot really find fault with her presentation. Even her exit from the water is graceful. The judges seem to agree, if the pleased murmuring he sees is any indication, and he folds his arms and glares at them. But his suspicions are confirmed only a few minutes later, when the woman is announced as the winner, with a perfect score. Even more irritating, he and Valkyrie have tied their scores.

"Doubtless a thoroughly biased competition," he mutters before half-bowing ironically to her. "Congratulations on all your success, Valkyrie, and with that, I will take my leave."
diewalkure: (093)

[personal profile] diewalkure 2018-02-18 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Valkyrie hadn't really cared one way or another about the actual competition, it had just been something to do, a quick and easy little adrenaline rush. It wasn't until she'd seen Loki that she'd hoped for any particular outcome... and this was even better than she'd imagined.

She shoots him a grin, unabashedly pleased, and nods regally back to him. "And yours. See you around, Loki."

It's perhaps both threat and promise.

She remains on the beach a little longer, however, and pointedly doesn't watch him leave. And she keeps the cloak.
