☀ the lead-up.
( she gets another envelope with the turn of the seasons. winter fades into warm, welcoming spring, and another cheerily addressed envelope is dropped into her mailbox. congratulations, it reads, and kara only laughs, tucking it back into a drawer. she's not ready to go home yet, and there's nothing she needs, is there? she's got her home, she's got her dog, she's got a man who loves her and friends who care for her — what more could she need?☀ the drive-in.
and then, much like things always do, everything changed. oliver goes home, too adrift by guilt and the need to take care of things like always to rest any longer, and kara finds herself surprisingly alone for the first time in a long time. it had been one thing to be alone of her own accord, to hermit herself until she was ready to come back — she had always known she could come back when she was ready, that he wouldn't give up on her after just a few days of silence. but to have him leave, even for good reason? she can't help but feel a little bit stung.
she mopes around the house for a few days in protest, cuddling with her dog and watching endless streams of trashy movies, only leaving to punch in and out at the bar or to answer the door for unreasonably large deliveries of comfort food-level groceries. that is, at least, until she finally needs to change again. going back to that same drawer means coming face to face with that envelope.
does she need a change? maybe not going home, but something new? maybe she does. )
( she doesn't want for much, so the thought of what she might want takes a while to come to her. it's not until she spots the familiar sight of her friends racing down a back alley in cars that shined in the moonlight that she realizes what she might want. something different, something she'd never really had. wheels. of course, kara knows how to drive. she'd been a teen girl on earth, after all; she'd taken driver's ed and managed a car decently well when she needed to drive one. but the thrill of being behind the wheel, of being normal after so many years of being anything but? it's a nice change. refreshing.☀ the beach(-on frise).
not that there's anything normal about kara's new wheels.
maybe it's the shiny baby blue paint. maybe it's the cool girl convertible style, with its creamy white top and shining chrome inlays. or, maybe, it's the fact that the car can fly, hovering just a few inches off the ground at rest only to soar above the clouds at a moment's notice. yeah, she's pretty sure it's the flying part that makes it super, but kara's happy enough with it even with the wheels on the ground.
it should be no surprise, then, that she takes the thing out for a spin every so often. like tonight, moon bright above her head, to take up a prime parking space — okay, maybe two prime spots, because she's a girl still getting used to this boat of a car — in the lot of the drive-in, snacks and blankets piled high in her backseat for what's sure to be a night of ridiculously cheesy indulgence.
come admire her wheels, steal her snacks, or maybe just come cuddle. she's down to clown, as the kids say. )
( she might not need to physically recharge after a fight here, but kara has always loved the warmth of the earth's bright sun on her skin. she'd been no stranger to the outdoors as a kid, always clambering on things she shouldn't to get a better view of the sky or running for hours from park to park just because she could; as an adult, she hadn't had as much time for it, but the rooftop of catco and the viewing platforms at the deo had seen plenty of activity in the moments she'd had to herself.☀ the wildcard.
here in cadelle, kara frequents the beach. the sand is soft underneath her skin, and serves as the perfect place for a growing ball of fluff to run out all his energy while kara sunbathes, leisurely tossing out broken pieces of shell or driftwood for him to fetch every so often. there's a small cooler of ginger ale and water beside her — much to mick's chagrin, since she hadn't even taken him up on his offer for something a little more fun in the sun — and plenty of space in the vicinity for visiting friends.
come say hello, untie her top, or even just soak up some sun nearby. just don't steal her dog. )
( y'all know the drill. )
Drive-In
A HOVERING car.}
..... Holy shit is that a flying car?
[please say that's a flying car]
no subject
to stiles' question, kara only grins. )
Yeah. ( she might be super, but even she knows that's pretty cool. ) I just got it. From the city, I mean. They brought it to me from home.
no subject
[he wants to touch the car. Which is hard since his arms are laden with popcorn, candy, soda, and a hot dog all balanced perfectly for him to carry]
no subject
( she can't help but laugh a bit at the ridiculous balancing act he's got going on. )
Do you need to set that down?
no subject
[he will look at his stuff, then up at her]
Well, actually, I'll split it all if I can hang out with you? I mean, I was going to park myself on a bench in the back...
[he totally isn't a mass murderer. One just wore his face for awhile, that's all]
the beach(-on frise)
He's safe. He's fed. He's housed. He's happy.
There's not a whole lot more he could ask for. Except that, for a long while, he'd been considering how much better things might be if he had a pet. Kara loves her dog. He knows that because she talks about Atticus a lot and she's tried to goad him into getting a dog, too. Dogs are a lot of work. Cats don't like him. So Derek had sort of shelved the idea for a while.
And then had come the little creatures that had hatched from the crazy-looking eggs and Derek had volunteered to help, because why not? He'd made the mistake of getting attached to Luna — his name. Don't judge him. And when the time had come to move on, he hadn't been able to.
Getting a slap on the wrist for stealing Luna had been completely worth it. She makes his life so much better, just by being around. He's never really been a beach guy when there's people out there, but Luna really likes rolling around in the sand, so he takes her and when he sees Kara and Atticus out there today, Derek grins and approaches. Luna is not far behind. ]
Hey, buddy! What are you doin'?
[ He's talking to Atticus; Kara's sunbathing, so he'll leave her be. ]
no subject
He's being ridiculous.
( not that that's new for atticus or anything. he's a tiny ball of golden fur, of course he's ridiculous. as for kara, she doesn't want to be rude, so she'll shade her eyes when he approaches, tilting her head to peer up at him as he settles nearby. )
You don't normally come to the beach.
no subject
No, I know, but Luna likes it a lot at night, so I figured she'd probably like it better during the day.
[ As if on cue, Luna joins Kara's dog in digging for a moment before she prances proudly around the hole — and Atticus — as if to take credit for creating the both of them, before sitting down and looking back at Derek and Kara. ]
I didn't think I'd run into anybody I know, just because there's always so many people here. I figured if anyone was here, I wouldn't notice in the crowd.
[ Except he'll probably always notice Kara, whether he likes it or not. ]
no subject
( kara's a good girl. she follows the rules. while she'd gone to the reserve to help, she'd been careful not to get too attached to any one creature, heeding the reminders that these were wild animals and not intended for pets at home; she didn't expect anyone to do otherwise. but derek had, and while kara had been initially a little surprised... well, she couldn't help but notice how much happier he seemed. and she had been encouraging him to get a pet, after all. it just so happened he was following her advice in a less traditional way. )
She is pretty cute, though. ( kara's not sure what to call her, but luna seems to know when she's being spoken about, practically prancing over to kara's side to receive a few delicate brushes across her fur. ) But definitely not the kind of pet I thought you'd go for.
( she'd imagined derek picking out something a lot more ... manly, if she had to describe it. a bigger dog, maybe, something he could run and hunt with. not a tiny ball of energy and soft fur. )
no subject
When he looks back at her a moment later, it's almost apologetic to her delicate sensibilities. ]
I hadn't planned on one at all, but yeah she's a weirdly perfect fit. I wouldn't have pictured myself with a female pet to begin with.
[ He doesn't elaborate on that, but that's mostly because Kara knows he's a werewolf and he has mentioned how his scent had made cats an impossibility and he's just sort of assuming that she'll fill in the blank that his concern would be that there might be some awkward confusion at the pet's level given that he doesn't exactly smell like a man. ]
But definitely not something this small. I don't know, I just couldn't leave her. The way she'd whine when I'd walk away? I couldn't. I don't know, I just couldn't.
no subject
I never would have guessed you were such a big softie...
( a total lie. she's known he was all mush inside for a long, long time now. )
How'd you pick her name, anyway? Luna, right?
no subject
Kara, I think we both know that's a lie.
[ Especially considering this is coming from the first person in Cadelle who ever got to see him in his wolf form and who he let pet him like a dog because she's his friend and he didn't want to embarrass her unless he had to. ]
Luna, yeah. I mean...I'm a werewolf. Luna as in commonly refers to Earth's moon?
[ He smirks a little. Of course he named her Luna, what the hell else would he have named his pet? ]
no subject
Wow. I am... jeez, I am an idiot, aren't I? ( self-deprecating chiding at its finest, folks. ) Obviously the moon.
( though, to be fair, kara had grown up with an entire different set of moons and stars and folk stories to go along with them. earth mythology was one of her less knowledgeable subjects. she would have failed that jeopardy category. )
Like a lunar eclipse. I get it. I don't know why I didn't think about it before...
no subject
No, no, you're not an idiot. I'm just so lame and predictable that it's almost unbelievable.
[ He's letting her off the hook; yeah she'd totally missed the obvious, but that doesn't mean anything, really. It's still a fair question. It's not like he named Luna Moon-Moon or something. ]
Yeah, no it's okay. Your life doesn't revolve around the room like mine does. It's fair. What do you have going on today?
drive in }
Once Kara's settled, she makes her way closer, raising an eyebrow in surprise.]
Did the flying come with the standard model, or did you get the super deluxe addition?
no subject
It came like this, actually. ( well, maybe not from the manufacturer, but... ) From home, I mean.
It was my boss' car, he let me borrow it. I asked the city if I could bring it here, learn how to drive it better, that sort of thing.
( a vague gesture to the ground beneath, where the tires have clearly crossed over multiple parking spaces. )
And park it, I guess.
no subject
In my opinion, parking is highly overrated.
