If he wasn't already attracted to Sansa, her talking like that would've done it. She's spoken for, though, and by someone Derek would like to become friends with, so he lets that thought fall away again. Strong women are a turn on for him, he can't help it. She has a wolf. She's gorgeous.
Focus.
"So you get it, even if your situation is a little different, they run in the same vein," he replies, pushing the train of thought away because, really, what good is it mulling over the missed opportunity? He's missed plenty of opportunities in Cadelle. He's also lost opportunities. He's also toed the line of screwing up good things. So what? Derek is accustomed and comfortable enough with being lonely in love that it's actually kind of easy to flip the switch and decide that if she's not available to ask out, maybe she's available to become a friend. That's actually probably better and safer in the long run, anyway. It's a hell of a lot less scary a path to choose to take, in his experience, anyway.
Derek reaches over to scritch Lady behind the ear again absently. "Does she get along with Baby's dog?" he asks, suddenly curious. It might or might not be a question that has more to do with whether Baby's dog is wary of the wolf because she's a wolf, which might or might not be something weighing on Derek's ability to take the plunge and adopt a dog the way Kara's been urging him to for months. He'd do better to have the company, after all. He's partially worried that the responsibility will be too much, but also...well. The dogs at the shelter are sometimes intimidated by him in ways that they can't seem to understand and he wonders if that's just because they're naturally fearful dogs or if it's specifically the wolf and whether that sort of thing is going to impact his ability or lack thereof to have a dog as a pet, someday. Maybe.
