she'd assumed that, given enough time and enough sacrifice on her end, that she'd go home with a magical solution, somehow transported back to safety and away from the clutches of douchebags who wanted nothing more than to make her suffer. she hadn't really thought about the idea of not returning to mystic falls at all. it's something worth considering, though she knows she might miss... well, her mother, most of all. but caroline also knew that, someday, she'd be saying goodbye anyway.
